The Barbican has announced two major contemporary music events, welcoming acclaimed UK art-rockers Squid for their venue debut alongside a sweeping tribute to the late Lebanese cultural icon Ziad Rahbani.
Brighton-formed quintet Squid will perform at Barbican Hall on Saturday 5 December 2026 as part of the celebrations marking Rough Trade’s 50th anniversary. Marking a decade together, the band—comprising Louis Borlase, Arthur Leadbetter, Laurie Nankivell, Anton Pearson, and Ollie Judge—will commemorate their first ten years while showcasing their latest album, Cowards. Praised for their volatile and intricate soundscapes, the group’s performance promises an inventive exploration blending post-punk, jazz, kosmische, and electronics.
Looking ahead to 2027, the Barbican will host ZIAD: A Tribute Concert by Faraj Suleiman on Saturday 23 January 2027. The special evening celebrates the enduring legacy of composer, playwright, and pianist Ziad Rahbani, whose satirical, defiant work helped shape modern Arabic music. Son of the legendary Fairuz, Rahbani famously fused Lebanese song traditions with funk and jazz to create an iconic soundtrack for generations across the Arab world and beyond.
Palestine-born pianist and composer Faraj Suleiman will lead the ambitious production, backed by a 20-piece band alongside guest vocalists. Renowned for placing the piano at the center of contemporary Arabic music, Suleiman will guide audiences through Rahbani’s vast repertoire, ranging from famous theatrical pieces and solo compositions to celebrated collaborations with Fairuz.
The newly announced dates join a busy upcoming contemporary music calendar at the venue, featuring performances from Bedouine, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, Spiritualized, and extensive programming across the EFG London Jazz Festival. Produced in partnership with Bird on the Wire and Marsm respectively, both concerts highlight the Barbican's continued commitment to hosting visionary talent and landmark cultural tributes.
