Johnny Marr returned to Manchester for a triumphant sold-out homecoming show at the Castlefield Bowl, marking his biggest headline solo performance to date. The concert anchors a milestone year for the guitarist, who is preparing for a massive headline date at Wembley Arena, global touring, and the autumn release of his fifth solo album, The Age of Everything.
Arriving on stage with his signature Fender Jaguar guitar, Marr and his band—comprising guitarist James Doviak, bassist Iwan Gronow, and drummer Jack Mitchell—received a hero's welcome. The setlist balanced celebrated classics from his extensive career with a substantial preview of unreleased material.
Marr showcased his upcoming record by debuting 'It’s Time' and 'All In A Life', alongside the current radio single 'Spin'. The new material, written in London and developed on the road in North America before being recorded in Manchester, captured a sharp, dynamic energy that resonated seamlessly alongside his established repertoire.
The hometown crowd responded with terrace-style chants echoing across the venue and surrounding canals. Marr delivered a sequence of formative hits, introducing 'New Town Velocity' from his debut solo album The Messenger with reflections on his youth in the city. The momentum built through mass singalongs of 'This Charming Man', the electronic pulse of 'Getting Away With It' beneath a giant disco ball, and a powerful rendition of 'How Soon Is Now?'.
Expressing gratitude to the audience for embracing the new music, Marr returned for a blistering three-song encore. The final segment featured 'Panic', a cover of Iggy Pop's 'The Passenger', and a closing performance of 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', which Marr dedicated exclusively to the thousands in attendance.
The evening, which also featured support performances from Everything Everything and The ClockWorks, served as a full-circle moment for the guitarist. By debuting cathartic new songwriting in the city that shaped his musical identity, Marr effectively framed the next chapter of his solo career. The Age of Everything is scheduled for release on October 2nd.
