The Black Crowes' lead singer Chris Robinson has upset the crowd at a concert in Tampa, Florida

During a stop on the band's summer Southern Hospitality Tour, Robinson was about to sing the group's hit 1990 ballad She Talks to Angels, when the politically-charged clash began.

In response to an Uncle Sam character seen in a graphic on a screen behind the band, the crowd at the venue began a "U.S.A." chant, TMZ reported.

At this, the Atlanta-born vocalist sarcastically told the audience, "Thanks for the geography lesson. I don't know what you have to be so proud of right now."

Those words led people to boo the rocker, with some leaving the venue in protest.

"For those of you f**king booing us," Robinson asserted, "some of us are not afraid and we most assuredly are not f**king ignorant."

Robinson's comments drew a backlash from erstwhile fans on social media.

"Just left your concert in Tampa," one user posted. "F**k y'all and your political BS! People just wanted to come and hear good music. Half the people left when stupid ass CR went political. So stupid. Not a fan anymore."

Having grown up in Atlanta, Georgia, Robinson has been critical in the past of conservative rhetoric, but has otherwise described himself as "not interested in politics".
