Britney Spears has been charged with Driving Under the Influence following her arrest in April.
The singer, 44, was arrested on March 4 in California after her black BMW convertible was seen veering between lanes and speeding near her California home.
Now she's officially been charged with the offence. Her arraignment is on May 4 at the Ventura County Superior Court.
"Whether or not Ms. Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney," the District Attorney's office explained. "Since it is a misdemeanour charge, she is not required to attend, and her attorney can make the appearance for her."
The DA office also indicated they will probably offer Spears a "wet reckless" plea deal. "For defendants without a prior DUI history, a low blood alcohol level, and where there is no crash or injury, prosecutors typically offer what is known as a 'wet reckless," the DA office confirmed. "This law allows a defendant to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs."
The Hit Me Baby One More Time singer voluntarily checked in to a rehab facility on April 12, following conversations with her two sons, Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19.
"Britney went to rehab after several conversations with both of her sons," a source told Weekly in April. "They expressed concern about her recent behaviour and urged her to seek professional help, which has been long overdue, to get her back on track. All they've ever wanted for their mom is health and happiness, even during the years they were estranged. They hope she'll take it seriously."
