BRIT award-winning artist Jessie J brought BBC Radio 2’s Piano Room Month to a spectacular close at London’s Maida Vale Studios. Accompanied by the world-famous BBC Concert Orchestra, she delivered a powerful rendition of "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. Her set also included the classic hit "Who You Are" and her new track, "California."
During a candid interview with host Vernon Kay, Jessie reflected on her connection to the world of Oz. She confirmed that she auditioned for the Wicked film adaptation and expressed immense pride in reaching the final stages of the process. The singer also discussed how her time living in California helped build the resilience she carries today.
The conversation turned to health and recovery as Jessie shared a harrowing story from her past. She revealed that her larynx once moved out of place following a car accident. Through intensive vocal therapy, she was able to restore her voice to its natural state. This journey has taught her the vital importance of being present and not sweating the small stuff.
Motherhood has also shifted her perspective. Jessie shared that while she loves her career and working hard, being a successful mother is her primary focus. She mentioned how much she enjoys showing her son her passion for her work. Since bringing him on stage at Radio 2 in the Park last September, he has reportedly asked to watch the video of that moment every day.
The performance comes following the release of her sixth studio album, "Don't Tease Me With a Good Time." The record was written and recorded during a deeply personal period as she also underwent treatment for breast cancer. Her appearance marks the finale of a star-studded month that featured sixteen different artists, including Tori Amos and Labi Siffre.
Jeff Smith, Head of Music for Radio 2, praised the season as the most successful yet. He noted that Jessie J’s outstanding performance provided the perfect high note to end the series. Fans can now watch the full performance and interview on BBC iPlayer and the Radio 2 YouTube channel.
