On February 24, 2026, at 11 a.m., New York City will officially etch a legendary name into the geography of Greenwich Village. Led by District 2 Council Member Harvey Epstein, West 8th Street will be co-named “Jimi Hendrix Way.” The ceremony takes place at the doorstep of Electric Lady Studios, the hallowed recording facility Hendrix founded in 1970, which remains a premier, operational hub for musical innovation today.
A Gateway to Learning
The street naming serves as the high-profile launch for a national education partnership between Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and Stevie Van Zandt’s TeachRock. This collaboration introduces a new multimedia curriculum, Jimi Hendrix: Rock’s Trailblazing Innovator and Influential Guitarist, designed for middle and high school students.
The curriculum, which meets National Core Arts and Common Core standards, utilizes exclusive archival footage from Hendrix’s iconic 1967 Monterey Pop performance. Through a partnership with NYU’s MusEdLab, students can even use interactive digital tools to experiment with the guitar effects and sonic breakthroughs that defined Hendrix’s signature sound.
Legacy of Activism and Innovation
The event brings together Stevie Van Zandt, Janie Hendrix (President/CEO of Experience Hendrix), and local educators to bridge the gap between rock history and modern classrooms.
"Jimi Hendrix wasn’t just a legendary musician; he was a fierce advocate for peace, racial equity, and social justice," noted Council Member Epstein. Indeed, Hendrix’s impact remains a vital case study for the 520 million children globally currently affected by conflict and social upheaval. As Van Zandt added, Hendrix’s story reminds young people that "creativity has no limits."
Educational Impact by the Numbers:
500+: The number of free, standards-aligned lessons in TeachRock’s library.
50 Years: The duration of Hendrix’s post-mortem influence on global sound design.
100% Free: Access to the Hendrix curriculum for educators at teachrock.org.
By connecting one of rock’s most historic landmarks to a national network of schools, "Jimi Hendrix Way" ensures that the artist’s journey from his R&B roots to global superstardom continues to inspire the next generation of creative thinkers.
