Police have shut down claims in a new independent report that Kurt Cobain was killed by a third party.
The Nirvana frontman died at the age of 27 in April 1994 from what was ruled to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
First reported by the Daily Mail, a peer-reviewed new research paper, led by two independent forensic specialists, alleges that his death was actually a homicide.
The specialists claim to have studied the autopsy and the available evidence surrounding the incident, alleging that one or more people were responsible for forcing an overdose, likely of heroin, to incapacitate the Smells Like Teen Spirit singer, before delivering a fatal gunshot wound.
The paper, published in the International Journal of Forensic Sciences, states in its thesis, "Kurt Cobain, based solely on publicly available discovery and analysed through a multidisciplinary critical method, was a homicide victim. His body was moved from the site of the homicide and staged to appear as a suicide."
However, the Seattle Police Department quashed the claims in a statement provided to the Daily Mail, refusing to reopen the nearly 32-year-old case.
"Our detective concluded that he died by suicide, and this continues to be the position held by this department," it read.
Cobain was married to singer Courtney Love at the time of his death. The couple shared a daughter, Frances Bean, who is now 33.
No member of the Cobain family has commented on the matter so far.
