In a landmark moment for alternative music, the legendary Morrissey has officially announced his fourteenth solo studio album, MAKE-UP IS A LIE, scheduled for release on March 6, 2026. This project marks a significant homecoming for the influential artist, as he reunites with Sire/Warner Records for his first studio album in over five years.
The New Single: "Make-up is a Lie"
Accompanying the announcement is the immediate release of the lead single and title track, “Make-up is a Lie.” Co-written by keyboardist Camila Grey and produced by Joe Chiccarelli (known for his work with The Strokes and The White Stripes), the track is a sonically daring departure. It opens with a trip-hop-inspired groove—driven by propulsive bass and haunting percussion—before erupting into a lush, dream-pop chorus.
The lyrics find Morrissey in peak poetic form, narrating a surreal encounter at a Parisian gravesite where a message from the beyond serves as a provocative call for unvarnished truth: "MAKE-UP IS A LIE! ALL MAKE-UP, MAKE-UP IS A LIE!"
Recording and Collaboration
The album was recorded at the storied Studio La Fabrique in Southern France. Morrissey is joined by a formidable lineup of collaborators, including Jesse Tobias, Alain Whyte, and Carmen Vandenberg. The 12-song tracklist features the long-rumored "Lester Bangs" and a faithful cover of Roxy Music’s 1973 classic, "Amazona."
World Tour and Physical Releases
The news arrives as Morrissey continues a massive world tour. Following successful runs through the UK and Europe, the next leg kicks off in North America this January, starting in San Antonio on January 10, followed by dates in Atlanta, Hollywood, and a special performance in the Dominican Republic. The tour then returns to Europe in February, culminating in a major show at London’s O2 Arena on February 28.
MAKE-UP IS A LIE will be available in multiple formats, including CD, digital, and collector’s vinyl variants such as a unique Zoetrope picture disc and a Blue vinyl edition. An exclusive Red vinyl pressing will be available only at independent retail stores.
