37 years after making her Official Chart debut with I Should Be So Lucky, pop icon Kylie Minogue lands her first-ever UK Christmas Number 1, and it’s a RECORD BREAKER!
The UK celebrates a fresh new Official Christmas Number 1 for 2025 as Kylie ends WHAM!’s two-year festive chart reign to clinch the most coveted chart-topper of the year with her brand-new Amazon Music exclusive, XMAS.
Official Charts can confirm that in securing the Christmas Number 1 crown, Kylie Minogue becomes the first female artist to boast UK Number 1 singles across four different decades -the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2020s.
Kylie surpasses Lady Gaga, Madonna and Mariah Carey, who have all topped the Official Singles Chart across three decades. In fact, only four artists in chart history have achieved the feat full stop. Elvis Presley, Elton John and Queen have managed four decades, while Cliff Richard had Number 1 singles spanning five decades.
Speaking exclusively to Official Charts, Kylie Minogue says:
“It’s hard to put into words how special this feels. Being Christmas Number 1 really is the most wonderful gift! I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been listening and sharing the love and I’m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!”???
The moment, unveiled live on BBC Radio 1’s The Official Chart with Jack Saunders this afternoon marks a milestone for Amazon Music too. Following a series of exclusive festive releases in recent years fronted by the likes of Tom Grennan, Sam Ryder and Ellie Goulding, 2025 marks the platform’s first Official Christmas Number 1 single. An Amazon Music Original, XMAS is available exclusively through the streaming platform, also released on physical CD and vinyl, and included on Amazon editions of her recent chart-topping album Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped).
As for Kylie herself, despite an early taste of Christmas Number 1 success as part of Band Aid II’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? back in 1989, XMAS is Kylie’s first solo credited festive chart-topper. She came close in 1988 with Jason Donovan duet Especially For You, which settled for the Christmas Number 2 spot that year, just behind Cliff Richard’s Mistletoe and Wine.
While Kylie has enjoyed a prolific run of 11 chart-toppers on the Official Albums Chart across her career, plus a glittering comeback to the Official Singles Chart Top 10 in 2023 with viral hit Padam Padam, XMAS marks her first UK Number 1 single since 2003’s Slow. XMAS is Kylie’s eighth UK Number 1 single overall.
Kylie is also the first solo female artist to land the Christmas Number 1 in 12 years, since Sam Bailey’s Skyscraper in 2013.
Rarer still, Kylie’s only the third international female solo artist to bask in UK Christmas Number 1 glory ever. She joins Trinidad-born Winifred Atwell, whose Let’s Have Another Party took the crown in 1954, and US superstar Whitney Houston, who managed it in 1992 with I Will Always Love You.
The last Australian artist to secure the festive UK chart-topper was Nicole Kidman 24 years ago, with 2001 Robbie Williams team-up Somethin’ Stupid.
Everybody’s going X-M-A-S! Kylie fans assemble to secure Christmas Number 1 for their queen
An intense week of campaigning saw lifelong Kylie fans turning out in full force to secure the ultimate Christmas present for their queen.
Giddily taking to social media throughout the week to rally their fellow troops into action, snapping up vinyl and downloads in their thousands, sharing viral videos of the TikTok-ready X-M-A-S choreography, and hot-footing it down to Kylie’s festive pop-up shop at Battersea Power Station, no stone has been left unturned in their quest to see Kylie at the top of the Official Chart tree this Christmas.
It paid off, according to Official Charts Company data, the past 7 days has become Kylie’s biggest week of UK sales and streams in 23 years, since 2002’s Love At First Sight. It’s also the best-selling physical single of the week in the UK, thanks to its release on 7” gold vinyl, 12” zoetrope vinyl and CD, topping the Official Vinyl Chart.
