In what is being hailed as the ultimate holiday gift for the rock community, Planet Rock has announced an exclusive broadcast that will feature a piece of music history previously locked away in the Queen archives.
On Monday, December 22, at 6:00 PM, legendary guitarist and songwriter Sir Brian May will host a festive special on the station. The centerpiece of the program is the world premiere of "Not for Sale (Polar Bear)," a Queen track that has remained unreleased for over five decades.
A Glimpse into the 'Queen II' Sessions
The track is a Brian May composition originally recorded during the 1974 sessions for the band’s seminal sophomore album, Queen II. While a version by May’s pre-Queen band, Smile, has circulated on bootlegs, this specific Queen recording has never been heard by the public.
The song has been meticulously remastered for a massive 2026 "rebuild" of the Queen II album. However, May decided to give fans an early listen. "I’m sneaking this into my Planet Rock special because I’m fascinated to know what people think about it," May commented. "To my knowledge, no one has ever heard this version."
Brian May’s Festive Jukebox
Beyond the exclusive premiere, the special offers a rare, intimate look at the music that soundtracks the holidays for one of rock’s most celebrated figures. May has hand-picked a personal "festive jukebox," featuring a curated selection of seasonal favorites.
Listeners can expect a diverse playlist including tracks from Slade, Chuck Berry, The Crystals, and even Bad News. In a charming personal touch, May will also spin a Christmas hit by his wife, Anita Dobson. Throughout the broadcast, May will share personal stories and memories, offering warm insights into his own holiday traditions.
How to Listen
Brian May’s Planet Rock Christmas Special airs Monday, December 22, at 6:00 PM, with a repeat broadcast on Christmas Day at 1:00 PM. Fans can tune in via digital radio or by asking their smart speaker to "Play Planet Rock."
