Lewis on being at Taylor Swift’s 30th birthday party and how he’d like a wedding invite!
Scott: You and I both had the pleasure of meeting Taylor Swift in the recent weeks.
Lewis: Yeah. Yes, you got bread. I did not get bread.
Scott: Did you not?
Lewis: No.
Scott: Although, let me tell you, she was sat in the chair next to you and she was like ‘I am so excited to meet Lewis Capaldi’.
Lewis: Oh really!
Scott: Yeah.
Lewis: She never said that, did she?
Scott: She did honestly.
Lewis: Did she actually say that? I have met her once but that’s so nice that she would say that.
Scott: She said to me it’s a great lineup including Lewis Capaldi. Do you know him? Oh yeah I do.
Lewis: No yeah I went to Taylor Swift's 30th birthday party a couple of years ago. Now, I don’t think it was the main Taylor Swift 30th birthday party. I think her birthday was around that day.
Scott: What was this then? A different party?
Lewis: It was a soirée. So basically, we were all playing like at these things in America. These Christmas shows in America, yeah. Everyone on the lineup was invited. Taylor was headlining that and she invited us all along to her 30th… Well I think… I think it was her 30th birthday party. It had like 30 Taylor hats and stuff.
Scott: You would presume then.
Lewis: But it was like free booze but I had to leave early to fly to Aberdeen. So next time Aberdeen, that’s how much I care about ya. I left Taylor Swift’s birthday party to be with you.
Scott: When was this? Was it the height of Someone You Loved time?
Lewis: Yeah around that time.
Scott: Around that album?
Lewis: Yeah. The first album. So, it would have been around 2019. December 2019 I think.
Scott: She is very nice.
Lewis: She is very nice, very cordial and a very lovely person.
Scott: You are not on the bread list though are you?
Lewis: I am not on the bread list. Taylor if you are out there please send me some bread.
Scott: I hope you have put yourself on the longlist, and it is a long list to perform at her wedding, seeing as you have met her twice.
Lewis: Listen, if I can just…
Scott: Tell me what you want.
Lewis: I don’t think I can be there, let’s put it that way.
Scott: Why?
Lewis: Because I don’t know her at all.
Scott: You went to her 30th.
Lewis: Yeah I went to her 30th.
Scott: You know what you are going to get? The evening invite.
Lewis: I would love the evening invite. The evening invite for weddings is the best.
Scott: Like, no plus one.
Lewis: And you don’t have to sit through the bit where they get married and stuff.
Scott: You just want to go for the evening bit.
Lewis: Invite me to the evening bit please Taylor.
Scott: Taylor, he just wants to go to the evening bit. He won’t bring anyone just…
Lewis: I will nip in.
Scott: Just nip in.
Lewis: Say hello and get out of there.
Scott: I told you they are queuing up. Mark Ronson offered himself up this week.
Lewis: Did he yeah?
Scott: Yeah as a wedding DJ.
Lewis: He offered himself up.
Scott: He offered himself up to Taylor and let’s not forget that his stepdad is in Foreigner.
Lewis: Oh I saw that. I saw you talking about that.
Scott: So ‘I Want to Know What Love’ Is was written for Mark Ronson’s mum.
Lewis: Yeah, it’s pretty good.
Scott: Offered a Foreigner and Mark Ronson collab. You buy one you get one free.
Lewis: I can’t offer anything like that.
Scott: No.
Lewis: My dad is a fishmonger. My dad will supply the fish Taylor. My dad will supply the fish for you.
Scott: As much fresh fish as you want.
Lewis: The freshest fish by the way.
Lewis chats about being back on the dating apps, although not swiping quite as much as before as he just wants to be left alone
Scott: Are you…How can I put it, are you courting at the moment?
Lewis: Am I courting? I'm on the apps.
Scott: Are you?
Lewis: I'm always in the apps, of course I'm on the apps.
Scott: My gran used to say courting. courting, yeah. It's quite nice, isn't it?
Lewis: I think Scottish people still say courting. I'm on the apps, but I'm not...
Scott: You're not a one-man woman.
Lewis: I'm not, I'm not a one woman man.
Scott: I'm sorry. A one -woman man, is what…
Lewis: But I, yeah, I'm always looking. I always got an eye…
Scott: Always swiping.
Lewis: Yeah, always swiping. To be fair, actually, I'm not actually on the apps as much as I have been in previous years in my life. Like before my last relationship, I'd say I was more heavily on the apps. I just like, I just want to be left alone.
Scott: Yeah, I get you.
Lewis: Just leave me alone.
Lewis Capaldi talks to Scott Mills about his Glastonbury performance earlier this year
Watch the interview clip here on BBC Radio 2 Instagram
Scott: Glastonbury this year was, well, what a moment that was, wasn't it?
Lewis: It was great fun, yeah, yeah, it was great. I mean, it was, like, I keep making jokes about it, but it genuinely was probably the best day of my life, especially after what happened two years prior.
Scott: If you've been to see Lewis Live, you know that in between the songs, often you do get a little bit of excellent stand-up comedy, but I mean, that show you had to just focus on the music, didn't you?
Lewis: Yeah this well the Glastonbury and to be honest the last couple of the last tour yeah I was like I'm just going to cut back on all my… Because I used to talk for the between songs you're talking like an extra half an hour out onto the gig yeah so I was like this time I just really want to get on playing the songs and thingy. So, I still do a little bit chatting but um yeah I just when I came back I wanted the focus to be on the tunes and stuff and it has been… And I was really worried that not centering sort of my silliness or jovial nature would have been a mistake but people really responded incredibly to it. It's nice knowing that whatever day I am feeling, I feel like I can be a bit more having a laugh or if I just want to sing the songs, people are still up for it.
Lewis on F1’s Martin Brundle accidentally blanked him on national TV after he thought his brother was Lewis Capaldi
Lewis: It's cute Martin Brundle has inadvertently made my brother a celebrity.
Scott: It was so good, so if people haven't seen this I don't know where you've been if you haven't seen it. But take us to Singapore and what happened at the F1?
Lewis: Yeah we were at the F1. My brother's a massive F1 fan and we got asked to play at the show before the race. I was like yeah I will take him along.
Scott: How cool that you can do that for your brother.
Lewis: Ah it was amazing. It was really nice and he really enjoyed it. It was nice to be able to do that with him. But then, we get to the top of the grid block and Martin Brundle was there and I could see him moving towards us with the microphone and I love Martin Brundle. He is amazing. But like, oh, here we go. He wants to speak to the big man. And then he just leans in on my brother and goes, Lewis…it was like my ego had just been deflated. I thought I'd really put in a lot of hard yards. But no, so he thought my brother was me. And then he starts talking to my brother about the gig. And my brother was like, Martin, I'm just a guy who's here. I'm not thinking. And then the worst thing about it, afterwards, after all the confusion settled, I went to give Martin Brundle a little high-five, a little handshake to, and he blanked me. He absolutely blanked me. On national television. So thank you, thank you Brundle. Blanked by Brundle.
Scott: We still love you, Martin.
Lewis: We still love you, Martin. Nothing you could do can make me not love you.
Lewis talks about working on his next ‘happy’ album
Scott: What is the eventual dream? Is it making the best sad songs money can buy? And touring the globe but settled with a family. A bit like our mate Sheeran.
Lewis: Yeah a bit like Ed and I would like to start making happy music. News flash, breaking news. Next album I am doing, it’s happy. It’s happy happy stuff.
Scott: Nonstop happy.
Lewis: Nonstop happy.
Scott: All of it?
Lewis: Maybe there will be one.
Scott: Give the people what they want.
