Billy Joel has revealed he was "furious" after realising his manager's betrayal.
The Piano Man hitmaker's new documentary lifts the lid on a multimillion-dollar lawsuit Billy launched against his former manager, Frank Weber, in 1989.
In HBO's Billy Joel: And So It Goes, the five-time Grammy winner recalled the moment he realised his colleague and confidant had been using up his hard-earned money.
"I found out I didn't have any of the money I should have," Billy, 76, explained. "It hit me like a ton of bricks."
He explained the discovery left him anxious about having to start from scratch to recoup his losses.
"It was a very depressing thing," Billy said. "When I found out that my money was pretty well-spent, I was furious. I realised I gotta start all over again. I gotta go right back to writing new songs, recording new songs and go out on the road and try to make that money back."
After filing a lawsuit against his former advisor for $90 million (£68 million), Billy eventually settled out of court.
He pointed out his situation wasn't uncommon, explaining creative people often failed to stay on top of money matters.
"We're not financially oriented," Billy said. "It wasn't about the money. It was about being a musician. I didn't like thinking as a businessman. I wanted to be an artist."
