Over the weekend, Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell and Andy Burrows caught up with The Evening Show with Dan O'Connell on Radio X.

Speaking to Radio X’s Dan O’Connell at Brighton’s On The Beach festival at the weekend, Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell admitted that he hates bands who play with a backing track or a click track when they perform live, saying that ‘every gig should be unique.’ Borrell and fellow bandmate Andy Burrows also confirmed that Razorlight are heading back into the studio to record a new album, with a new single already ‘in the can.’

Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell blasts bands who play live with a backing track, says that ‘every gig should be unique’

JB: “When we go on stage, we don't have a backing track or anything pre-recorded that we're playing along to, whereas most bands do. I think that sucks out all the spontaneity of doing gigs. And I think every time you do a gig, it should be about the musicians on stage kind of, like, making something happen. And sometimes it works better than other times, and I think that's part of a gig. And I think it depends on the crowd, it depends on where you are, and every gig should just be its unique thing just in a moment.”

DOC: “Do you think that's because, though, technology has allowed people to sound more polished or be polished and take less risks?”

JB: “They’re not even polished. They're playing along to something that's pre-recorded, so they're doing the same show every night, right? Or they're playing along to a click track, because the drummer, for whatever reason, doesn't feel confident enough holding a tempo. We've got a great drummer. Like, that's why Razorlight is a really good band live, right? But it's so many more bands than you think. And just, like, I hate it. So, yeah, every gig should be unique. I like it when you go and see the [Rolling] Stones. They're rubbish for the first song, and then suddenly it just becomes the greatest thing in the world.”

Razorlight confirm that they are heading back into the studio to work on a new album, with a brand-new single already ‘in the can’

DOC: “What's next? Is there an album? Are you writing? Are you creating? Are you demo-ing?”

JB: “What is next, Andy? Are we going in the studio soon?”

AB: “Yeah, I think we’re going in the studio soon, aren’t we?”

JB: “Are we? Is that it confirmed?”

AB: “Yeah.”

JB: “That’s an exclusive right there! There you go, it’s been officially confirmed. We’re going to make a new album.”

AB: “We’re going to make a new album, we’re going to go on another tour, I think, next year. We’re going to go to a lot of places next year.”

JB: “Yeah, actually, we're doing a massive tour next year, and there's some good stuff in the pipeline, in the can. We're putting a single out soon, yeah. So hopefully that’ll get to get to you guys at Radio X.”
