This morning, Burna Boy joined Capital XTRA Breakfast with Robert Bruce and Shayna Marie.

Afrobeats megastar Burna Boy discussed working with the likes of Mick Jagger and Shaboozey on his forthcoming album, No Sign of Weakness, on Capital XTRA this morning, where he admitted that working with the pair inspired him to make his music ‘magical in the most perfect way possible.’ Burna Boy also candidly admitted that he got too ‘lost in the sauce’ of living in London and moving back to Nigeria help to remind him of ‘who he was supposed to be.’

Burna Boy says he wanted to work with Mick Jagger and Shaboozey to ‘create bridges’ and make his music ‘magical in the most perfect way possible’

SM: “You've always blended styles, genres, sounds, vibes, really well. Are there any new examples on this album that people will have heard, but can you talk to us a little bit about what you've tried with this album?”

BB: “I mean, I always try stuff. Like, on this album, I'll say with Shaboozey, that's Afro… Call it Afro-country, you know? Afro-western? We’ll figure it out. It's Afro-country or something like that. And then we have The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger. You know, that's like rock. I don't even know what to call that one, it's just a mad blend that just works. And for me, that's what I'm all about – creating those bridges and just making it work in the most perfect way possible and just making it magical.”

Burna Boy admits he got ‘too lost in the sauce’ living in London and going back to Nigeria helped him to ‘grow into who he was supposed to be’

RB: “When we see you, the African giant, you rep Nigeria hard; you rep Africa hard.”

BB: “Most definitely.”

RB: “And you've taken that around the world. Have you seen the perception of Africa change as your career has gone on and all the different places you've travelled to?”

BB: “Yeah, most definitely. I’ll tell you a story, right. As I said, at that time I wasn't really hanging out with Nigerians…”

RB: “Because that's not who was around you?”

BB: “Exactly, not who was around me always, you know? So, at that point, I almost forgot who I was. When I got back to Nigeria in 2010 finally, I got a tattoo of the Nigerian coat of arms on my on my hand. Because I realised I almost slipped out. Like, I forgot. Like, I almost forgot that part [of myself], because I was too lost in the sauce, you know? So, coming back and doing that, that kind of just grounded me and just kind of made me become or grow into what I was supposed to be.”
