Heavy metal icons Iron Maiden are set to be commemorated on an official UK coin, marking 50 years since their formation in 1975. The Royal Mint today unveiled a striking new collector's item featuring the band's renowned mascot, Eddie, joining previous honourees like Queen, Elton John, and David Bowie in the Music Legends series.
Crafted by Iron Maiden artist Albert 'Akirant' Quirantes, the coin's design meticulously incorporates numerous hidden references to the band's extensive career, albums, and global tours, offering fans and collectors "Easter eggs" to discover. Iron Maiden collaborated closely with The Royal Mint to ensure the coin authentically captures the essence of their five-decade influence. This commemorative piece is the first official product to bear the band's 50th Anniversary logo.
Rod Smallwood, Iron Maiden’s Manager, expressed the band's honour: “Having Eddie on an official UK coin is a continuation of his incredible odyssey since we unearthed him back in 1980. We've been on stamps, beer bottles, plane tails and now legal tender!" He praised Quirantes's detailed work, noting the subtle nods to the band's journey.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, highlighted Iron Maiden's role as "fearless pioneers in music, flying the flag for Britain around the globe for half a century." She anticipates the coin will become a highly sought-after collector's item for both numismatists and rock enthusiasts.
Designer Albert ‘Akirant’ Quirantes described the project as "one of the most thrilling" of his career, aiming to capture both the band's iconic imagery and rebellious spirit.
The Iron Maiden commemorative coin is available in various editions, with prices starting from £18.50. For more information and to view the full range, visit www.royalmint.com/ironmaiden.
