Zak Starkey has insisted he's "on good terms" with The Who frontman Roger Daltrey after being let go from the band for the second time.

The drummer revealed on Instagram on Monday that he'd had a phone call with Daltrey, who had clarified that Starkey was retired from the band instead of fired.

"I had a great phone chat with Roger at the end of last week which truly confused both of us!!!" he wrote. "Rog said I hadn't been 'fired'...I had been 'retired' to work (on) my own projects. I explained to Rog that I have just spent nearly 8 weeks at my studio in Jamaica completing these projects, that my group Mantra Of The Cosmos was releasing one single at the beginning of June and after that had run its course ( usually 5/6 weeks ) I was completely available for the foreseeable future....Rog said 'Oh!' and we kind of left it there."

The 59-year-old, who has worked with The Who since 1996, added, "On good terms and great friends as we have always been. Gotta love these guys. As my mum used to say 'The mind boggles!!!'"

Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, was fired and rehired in the space of a week back in April following the band's Teenage Cancer Trust shows at London's Royal Albert Hall in March.

Earlier this month, guitarist Pete Townshend announced that they had parted ways with Starkey once again and Scott Devours would replace him on their upcoming tour.

Addressing his second exit, Starkey wrote on Instagram at the time, "I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endevours this would be a lie. I love the who and would never had quit."
