Ellie Rowsell says that fans will be ‘surprised’ by Wolf Alice’s forthcoming album The Clearing and shouldn’t expect it to sound like new single ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’
DOC: “It almost feels like it’s a personal mantra, it’s a personal statement of coming into your own power, somebody very much in their own self-esteem. Is that what it is?”
ER: “Yeah, I think it explores those themes. I like that you said it feels like a mantra, because I like the idea that of someone listening to it and feeling like that about themselves, yeah.”
DOC: “Do you feel like that yourself though?”
ER: “No, haha! No, I do. I do. Now that I know people are hearing it, I can hear it again for the first time, and I do feel like that, yeah. But yeah, we’ve lived with it for a long time.”
DOC: “Is it a taster of what’s to come then? The brand-new album, The Clearing, is out in August. Is there a theme?”
ER: “I feel like yes, it is a taste, but I think you’ll maybe be surprised when you listen to the rest of the record in the context of ‘Bloom Baby Bloom.’ But yeah, a little bit of a taster, but don’t think there’s going to be a bunch more ‘Bloom Baby Blooms.’”
Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell says she ‘wouldn’t dare’ compare herself to Axl Rose after channelling the singer’s falsetto style on new single ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’
DOC: “Now before we play the song, Ellie, I know you’ve referenced Axl Rose as a sort of point of ambition, maybe? Somebody you wanted to be a female version of for this song?”
ER: “Oh my God, I would never dare try to do that! But I think I was kind of thinking about rock singers who sing in falsetto, and he’s obviously like… I get scared that I mentioned Axl Rose, because I don’t actually know a lot of his music! But yeah, stylistically he can go very high, can’t he? And he kind of riffs with his own voice. I mean, I’ve tried with falsetto, obviously. But yeah, that kind of almost soloing with your own voice and stuff is something I was like, ‘Gosh, it’s not something I’ve ever thought about.’”
Wolf Alice promise they will ‘try to behave’ at Glastonbury Festival next month as they hit the road on tour
DOC: “You’ve got Glastonbury coming up next month. That might help on the journey to realness.”
ER: “Yeah, I absolutely cannot wait for that. We’re playing on the Sunday, which is… Oh God!”
DOC: “Are you going to go down on the weekend?”
TE: “We’re going to go for the weekend, yeah. Like, Ells is talking about drawing up proper schedules to try and watch as much stuff as we can and try and behave before Sunday. But it can be really like inspiring watching that much music. There’s so much to watch at Glastonbury.”
