Gloria Estefan and her daughter Emily Estefan are writing the tunes for a new musical, inspired by a Latin American true story.

Basura is heading to Broadway, with music and lyrics by the Cuban American superstar and her songwriter daughter.

Spanish for "garbage", the show tells the journey of Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra, a group of young artists who turn scrap material into musical instruments.

"This is a story that has been close to my heart for several years since I first encountered the determination and ingenuity of the young people of Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra," Estefan shared.

"Emily and I are thrilled for our music to be a part of telling their story in this original musical."

Based on the award-winning documentary Landfill Harmonic, Basura brings the sound of Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra to the theatre as a "heart-swelling reminder that even in the most unlikely places, you can build something beautiful", according to the show's promoters.

It will open at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta from 30 May to 12 July 2026, before moving to Broadway.

The show marks a return to Broadway for Gloria Estefan's music which was featured in the 2015 Broadway musical about her life, On Your Feet!
