Kesha has recalled how she realised she needed to breakup with her secret fiancé while she was writing a song.

During an interview for SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up on Thursday, the Tik Tok hitmaker reflected on her decision to end her engagement. Kesha has never revealed the identity of her former partner.

"Basically, I find that writing songs leads me to my truth. I was engaged and I didn't wanna be anymore and I didn't even realise that I was gonna break up with him until I wrote a song about it, and then I listened back to it, and I was like, 'Oh no, I'm gonna break up with him now,' but it led me to my truth 'cause I can't lie in the song."

Kesha went on to insist that it's impossible to avoid the truth when writing song lyrics.

"A, your song will suck, but also, that's not what it's there for, you know?" the 38-year-old added.

In an interview for Rolling Stone in 2023, Kesha revealed she wrote the song Too Far Gone after ending her engagement. She indicated she was still friends with the ex-boyfriend.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Kesha opened up about starting her own record label following her long-running legal battle with her former music producer Dr. Luke, also known as Lukasz Gottwald. The case was settled in June 2023.

"I finally feel free. And I'm excited. I am the CEO of my own record label... and I have written every song, and I have produced every song, and I have chosen all of the artwork and every take, vocally - it's all been up to me, and I love it," she enthused. "I listen to it all the time. I listen to my own record when I need to pump myself up."

Kesha's sixth studio album, Period, is set to drop on 4 July.
