David Johansen, singer of the punk band New York Dolls, has stage 4 cancer, which has progressed to a brain tumour.

The Personality Crisis singer's daughter, Leah Hennessey, revealed details via her Instagram story.

"As some, but not many of you know, David has been in intensive treatment for stage 4 cancer for most of the past decade," her message began. "There have been complications ever since."

Hennessey shared that she and her mother have decided to reveal Johansen's health condition "due to the increasingly severe financial burden our family is facing".

To make matters worse, she added that the day after Thanksgiving, Johansen fell down the stairs and broke his back in two places, and has been bedridden ever since.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Johansen, the sole surviving founding member of the '70s punk band, said, "We've been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation.

"This is the worst pain I've ever experienced in my entire life. I've never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you."
