Jelly Roll has been named as American Idol's first-ever "artist in residence".

In a YouTube video posted on Tuesday, the Son of a Sinner singer - real name Jason DeFord - and host Ryan Seacrest announced the news.

"I'm American Idol's artist in residence!" he exclaimed.

Ryan then declared that it feels as if Jelly is "shaping America's future".

"And I feel like I'm giving them the energy they need. I'm uplifting and trying to get 'em goin'!" the 40-year-old enthused.

To conclude, Jelly picked Ryan up and threw him over his shoulder before giving him a big hug.

Representatives for ABC have not yet detailed what the country star's new gig will entail.

Season 23 of American Idol will premiere with a two-hour episode on 9 March.

A preview will be broadcast following the live telecast of the 2025 Academy Awards on 2 March, with fans of the music competition show able to see the new judging panel - comprised of Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie - together for the first time.

Last August, ABC bosses announced that Carrie had been tapped to serve a judge, having won season four of the series in 2005.

In a statement, Craig Erwich, president at Disney Television Group, described having the Before He Cheats hitmaker on the panel as a special moment.

"As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television," he praised. "This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie."
