Zayn Malik has admitted that he doesn't know if he's ever "truly been in love".
The former One Direction star, who shares a three-year-old daughter with his ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid, has wondered if he's ever been in love.
"When you ask me what love is I think the reason that's hard for me is that I don't know if I've actually truly been in love at this point," Zayn shared during a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show podcast.
"I don't know how you know what love is, that's a real deep question," he continued. "It's hard you know, I think love comes in many different forms. (Being) in love with somebody is a whole different kind of complicated - there are so many variables to it, you can never really pinpoint what is love."
The 31-year-old dated model Gigi on and off between 2015 and 2021 and they welcomed their daughter Khai in September 2020.
The couple split after the pop singer allegedly shoved Gigi's mother Yolanda Hadid during an argument. Zayn later pleaded no contest to four counts of harassment against The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star.
He also dated Little Mix star Perrie Edwards, his former fiancée, between 2012 and 2015.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Pillowtalk hitmaker revealed that one of the songs on his forthcoming album Room Under the Stairs details a break-up with an ex, who he did not name.
"The first song that I wrote on the record was Alienated, and it was towards the end of my relationship. Like when me and my ex were breaking up," he told the podcast host. "So there's the heavy narrative of the kinds of things I was going through mentally in that situation and what I was thinking and how I was feeling."
Room Under the Stairs is due for release on 17 May.
