Benny Blanco has opened up about falling for Selena Gomez.

The songwriter and record producer has revealed he realised he had feelings for the Lose You to Love Me singer during a recording session.

The pair had known each other as friends and collaborators for nearly a decade before they started dating in June last year.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Thursday, Benny admitted he "was the last one to know" he was in love with Selena.

The 36-year-old continued, "It's crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don't even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you're like, 'Wait, I'm in love.'"

The couple first sparked dating rumours in November last year, when Selena, 31, commented on Benny's post announcing his new cookbook. The following month, the former Disney Channel star confirmed that she had been dating the record producer for six months.

Elsewhere in the interview, Benny admitted that his online persona is not who he is in real life.

"I'm really good at turning it on for the camera if I have to," he told the publication. "When I have to talk about myself, I feel strange."

Benny is currently gearing up for the release of his new cookbook, Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends, on 30 April.
