Shakira has revealed she lost money on her first world tour.

The Hips Don't Lie singer explained production costs on her 2001 Tour of the Mongoose international show completely blew out the budget.

Shakira, 47, revealed the biggest cost blowout was a gigantic, metallic cobra that loomed over the stage.

"That cobra cost like a million dollars to produce and then taking it on the road was so expensive," she told Sean Evans while appearing on an episode of Hot Ones this week.

She added that although the tour was one of her most popular and should have been more lucrative, the associated expenses left her out of pocket.

"At the end of the tour I lost money – and it was one of my most successful tours," Shakira lamented.

"I travelled the world and it sold out everywhere and I had to take a big loss because of the stupid cobra."

Shakira also revealed another aspect of her early career that leaves her cringing: her singing.

"I think I used to overdo the cries in my voice," she explained.

"You know it's too much – I think I overdid it, I think I exaggerated. Too much Shakira!"
