Today on Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Zoe had the first interview with Olly Alexander following the reveal of his song, Dizzy, which will be the UK’s entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2024! Zoe was also joined by Michael Sheen and Paul Whitehouse on the show.

Zoe: You’re representing the UK at Eurovision. Does it feel real yet, how are you?
Olly: Now that it’s getting closer to the date, it’s starting to feel real and its good. I feel like I’ve got less anxiety now ‘cause it’s real, I know a bit more about what I’m actually going to be doing and I’m just getting excited. It’s like there’s nothing else in the world like Eurovision, it’s so unique and I’m just excited to be taking part.
Zoe: I think you’re the perfect person to represent us. I know there was huge excitement, there was talk it might be you and then suddenly it really was happening, ‘cause you watched as a kid didn’t you?
Olly: I did, I watched as a kid, yeah, my family would have watch along parties so I remember, like, late 90s the Gina G years – a great time for the UK!
Zoe: I love that’s when you were a kid, like Gina G, the late 90s. Us lot...
Olly [laughs]

Michael Sheen: We’re a big Eurovision house, yes, my partner, Anna, is Swedish. Obviously, the spirit of Eurovision resides in her so we’re very excited about it being in Sweden this year.
Olly: I hope you’ll be there
Michael: I would love to be there, love to be there, can’t wait.
Zoe: Get Michael to Malmo!
Michael: I’m hoping I can be in your backing band, just doing a bit of dancing in the background!
Olly: That would be great, that might get me a few extra votes you know.
Michael: Never know!
Olly: So, Finland have like an internal competition selection process for their artist and I announced the UK jury points for their contest... the winner, they’re called Windows 95 Man, representing Finland this year.

About Olly’s song for Eurovision 2024
Olly: Right, well, the song is called Dizzy. I wrote it with a very amazing chap called Danny L Harle who also produced it and the song is about an overwhelming rush of love that you have for somebody and so much so that it makes you dizzy, turns your world upside down... Hey World, here’s my new song it’s Dizzy by me, Olly Alexander!

Zoe: There it is, Olly Alexander and Dizzy. Michael Sheen, your face!
Michael: Ah, I never thought there would be a reboot of Vic Reeves’ single from the 90s, Dizzy, as our Eurovision entry! That is fantastic. Do you know what you’re gonna wear yet?
Olly: Do you know I don’t, I don’t know yet, it’s being planned... something fabulous.
Paul: I mean you wouldn’t want to come on in camouflage would you!
Michael: Could you maybe go for something like what ABBA wore in the 70s?
Olly: That’s a good idea, an homage
Michael: That would go down well, a nice jumpsuit.
Olly: Or I quite like something you can whip off, a bit like Bucks Fizzesque
Michael: Or do both – a jumpsuit that you whip off!

Zoe: ..... Is it a relief that it’s out there now?
Olly: It’s such a relief, oh, so happy.
Zoe: And first official showing of the video tonight on Graham Norton
Olly: Yes, tonight BBC One, 10.40, meeting Graham... and we’ll be showing the video.

Zoe: What’s this I hear about your mum being looked after by Rylan at Eurovision?
Olly: Well that’s what I’m hoping for, Rylan said that he would look after her, take her out, so now I’m a bit scared actually.
Zoe: You should be very scared.
Michael: A night out with Rylan.
Zoe: Its not a night, there’s no sleeping involved.
