Rihanna has pledged $5 million (£4.3 million) towards the coronavirus relief efforts through her Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF).

The 32-year-old Work hitmaker's singer's foundation announced the contribution on its Twitter account on Saturday, which aims to support and fund "groundbreaking and effective education, health and emergency response programs around the world."

"We’ve responded to COVID-19 by distributing $5 million to @PIH @DirectRelief @FeedingAmerica @rescueorg @WHO & #Barbados to prepare communities w/ critical protective gear, medical supplies, equipment and access to food across multiple regions. #CLF #HealthcareHeroes," the post read.

The Umbrella singer founded the nonprofit organisation in 2012 in honour of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite.

CLF Executive Director Justine Lucas discussed the monumental importance of Rihanna's pledge with TMZ, adding: “Never has it been more important or urgent to protect and prepare marginalised and underserved communities -- those who will be hit hardest by this pandemic."

Numerous stars have made donations to help support those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with Ariana Grande and Kanye West both pledging donations to charities.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Bell, and Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have also donated to coronavirus relief efforts.

The outbreak of Covid-19 has seen more than 308,600 cases of the virus registered, resulting in a death toll of over 13,000, since it began in December.
