Ed Sheeran has "learned to act" for a role in a new movie - in which he plays himself.

The singer, who was heavily criticised for his cameo appearance in TV show Game of Thrones, has revealed he will play himself in a new movie directed by Danny Boyle.

Ed deleted his Twitter account last July (17) following criticism over his cameo appearance in the HBO show, after fans slammed it for lacking subtlety.

However, after being on the set of the as yet untitled movie, Ed is convinced his new role will be an improvement on his previous efforts.

"Yeah, it’s very clever,” Ed told the Associated Press (AP). “I got to actually kind of learn how to act. With the Game of Thrones thing, that was literally me popping in for a day and making a cameo. Or Bastard Executioner was me popping in for a day. But this was like full days on set, like full 12-hour days.”

According to editors at AP, Ed stars in the film written by Richard Curtis, in which actor Himesh Patel plays a musician who wakes up one day to discover that he is the only person on the planet who remembers the Beatles.

Ed then discovers Himesh’s character and takes him on tour, only for the protege to eclipse his own fame.

“They shot it around loads of my gigs. So it was a very intense two months," Ed said, explaining that he completed his part of production earlier this year. "Because I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film. I was playing myself, so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to (mess) up.”

The 27-year-old's new role is just the start of his movie ambitions, as the Shape of You hitmaker shared his long-term goal is to make a movie musical similar to 2007 film Once.

“I want to make something like that," he smiled. "Something like that where songs dictate the film in a way.”

Ed comments came as he promoted a new Apple Music documentary Songwriter, directed by his cousin Murray Cummings, about the creation of his last album ÷ (Divide).
