John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen named their daughter Luna because she will always be the "light in the darkness".
The couple welcomed its first child in April (16) after model and TV personality Chrissy underwent in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment to fall pregnant, and the stars have been revelling in life as new parents since their baby's arrival.
Fatherhood has also provided John with plenty of songwriting inspiration and he reveals even the title of his new album, Darkness and Light, is directly linked to little Luna's moniker.
"The theme of Darkness and Light is - it's that idea that there is trouble in the world, there is darkness, there is uncertainty, but we have light. We have love in our lives that we can hold on to," he explained to The Associated Press. "We named our daughter Luna, which literally is the moon, the light in the darkness."
Darkness and Light features one particularly meaningful song dedicated to the seven-month-old, a track called Right by You (For Luna), and John admits he broke down in tears when he first shared the finished tune with his family.
"When I played it for her and Chrissy for the first time, I just started crying because it felt so real to me and felt so appropriate for how I feel as a new father," he shared.
In the special ballad, John openly wonders what his daughter will be like when she grows up.
"New parents have questions more than they have answers and that's what we wanted the song to reflect," he said. "You know, 'Will you live like me? Will you look like me? Will you have your mother's fire? Will you think like me?'"
Little Luna also appears alongside her famous parents in the music video for John's current single, Love Me Now, which includes images and footage of families from all different backgrounds, including a couple in a refugee camp in Iraq, and another at North Dakota's Standing Rock Reservation, where protestors have been campaigning against a controversial oil pipeline.
The video serves as a commentary on the social justice issues facing today's world, and John hopes his daughter follows in her parents' footsteps as outspoken activists.
He added, "I want her to know that she's in a privileged place, but that there's a lot of people that are less privileged. I want her to know where I come from, where her mother comes from. We both come from working class families that didn't always have it easy. And I want her to be grateful for what she has, but also to be kind and considerate and giving and aware of what's happening around the world."
