Jennifer Lopez is sporting a black eye after taking an unexpected hit while filming TV police drama Shades of Blue.

The superstar showed off her shiner in a close-up snap of her face on Instagram on Wednesday night (30Nov16), when she posed without make-up.

"Sometimes work can be rough... lol (laugh out loud)," she captioned the photo.

She then added a string of hashtags, including "#sufferforyourart" and "#youshouldseetheotherguy", before admitting she was "just kidding" as "nobody hit me".

Lopez did not reveal how she sustained the injury, but it's not the first real-life drama to take place during filming of Shades of Blue's second season.

In October (16), police were called to location shoot in Brooklyn, New York to investigate reports of gunshots fired by a group of men who had allegedly invaded the set and chased production staff around.

Lopez had already left for the day when the incident occurred, but recurring guest star Kathryn Kates was reportedly still on set at the time and took cover in her trailer.

Authorities quickly took control of the situation. No one was injured, but some cast and crew members were said to have been shaken up by the incident.

Lopez stars as tough New York Police Department detective Harlee Santos in the series, which follows her character's struggles to balance work and life as a single mum, while also being forced to work with the FBI's anti-corruption task force to out her own crooked co-workers.
