Synth-pop pioneer and technological visionary Thomas Dolby has announced his return to the UK stage this May for a unique concert series titled Iconic 80s Recollections. The seven-date tour promises an intimate blend of hit songs, personal stories, and musical reminiscences from the decade that defined his career.
While Dolby often performs solo, this tour marks a rare departure as he is joined by a powerhouse band of distinguished guests. The lineup includes Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson) on guitar, Mat Hector (Iggy Pop, Thom Yorke) on drums, and Ukrainian bass sensation Ana Pshokina. Together, they will offer fans a first look at an ambitious symphonic project slated for 2027, featuring a "virtual" orchestra powered by AI and digital sampling projected live on screen.
"Returning to play in my home country is always a thrill," said the British-born artist, who has spent much of the last four decades in the USA. "It’s emotional to look out at the loyal fans who have stuck by me even when I spent long periods away from the pop world."
That "time away" was spent revolutionizing technology; Dolby famously founded Beatnik, the company responsible for the polyphonic ringtone engine used in billions of Nokia and Motorola devices. He also served as TED’s Music Director for over a decade and currently leads the Music for New Media program at Johns Hopkins University.
The tour kicks off on 15 May in Manchester, visiting Bournemouth, Bristol, Birmingham, London, and Leeds, before concluding on 27 May in Edinburgh. Adding to the "sophisti-pop" nostalgia, Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout will join as a special guest, performing classics from his band’s celebrated songbook.
From the chart-topping success of "She Blinded Me with Science" to performing with David Bowie at Live Aid, Dolby’s career is a masterclass in the intersection of art and innovation. Tickets for all dates are on sale now below.
