The New Zealand Music Commission is proud to present New Zealand @ The Great Escape 2024, showcasing four of the best New Zealand artists. The event will take place 12pm – 4pm, Thursday 16th May at Patterns Downstairs in Brighton. The artists making their Great Escape debut: Ashy, Dartz, Tom Lark and Earth Tongue.
ASHY: is an effervescent pop artist and songwriter. She is a musical chameleon, delving into sub-genres of R&B, dance and contemporary sounds, and is known for her incredibly polished production, shimmering vocals, and catchy melodies. She has amassed over 3 million streams across all platforms, enjoyed chart success and has worked with leading pop producers from New Zealand, Australia, and the US. ASHY has worked with the likes of producers Josh Fountain (BENEE), Ben Wylen (Ariana Grande), Liam Quinn (Peach PRC) & Sam Trevethick (Shapeshifter).
“ASHY’s debut EP ‘Status’ dropped earlier this year, and it’s one of the strongest pop records released by an Aotearoa artist in years” ROLLING STONE – AUSTRALIA
DARTZ: The pub-punks ignited into existence in 2019 after vocalist Danz shit-talked his way into an opening slot for Aussie rockers The Chats — before realising he might need a band (and songs). He quickly recruited mates Crispy, Rollyz, and Clark, and the four-piece started firing out their unique brand of garage rock: fast-paced guitar-driven anthems with razor-sharp lyrics tackling everything from relatable tales of small-town parents and racing to the pub after work, to hard-hitting takes on issues like decolonisation, drug testing, and megachurch pastors. Their second album “Dangerous Day To Be A Cold One” was released via legendary Aotearoa label Flying Nun this March, debuting at #1 on the NZ album charts thanks to a passionate national fanbase. With songs named “Bush Weed”, “Gender Reveal Burnout”, “Flat Inspection”, “Get In On The Groundfloor”, and “Learning To Drive With Dad”, there’s no question that DARTZ are continuing as they started: taking the piss out of every landlord, pyramid schemes and property developer under the sun, while also expressing a genuine love for their rural NZ upbringings and the cast of characters that fill out those small towns.
“There's so much going on under DARTZ’s furious and fun anthems: great wit, honest storytelling, and effortless ensemble work.” ROLLING STONE AUS/NZ
“DARTZ carry an energy like few other acts; politically aware class clowns with a reputation for bringing the party wherever they appear” NZ HERALD
TOM LARK: is the original musical project of Shannon Fowler, who also releases material under the Shannon Matthew Vanya pseudonym. Where SMV allows for pop indulgence, Tom Lark is an outlet for the artist’s indie sensibilities. Having released two eponymous Tom Lark EPs in 2011 and 2015 respectively, Fowler set the project aside for a period but has returned to his first love, which turns out to be making sunburnt psychedelic folk fit for sensitive cowboys to meander and philosophise to. Fowler was born in Otautahi and relocated to Tamaki Makaurau in 2012, after a stint recording in Berlin. He works from his Okie Dokie Studio, situated just off Karangahape Road. There he has produced, co-written and engineered tracks with a delightful collection of collaborators, including Merk, Randa, A.C. Freezy, Belladonna, The Fuzzy Robes, Georgia Lines, and the mysterious Rick Shrimp.
EARTH TONGUE: is a heavy psych rock two-piece from Wellington. Guitarist Gussie Larkin is a master of the fuzz-smothered riff, and along with Ezra Simons’ off-kilter drumming, they’ve been sending punters into transcendental states since their emergence in 2016. Their debut album ‘Floating Being’ (Stolen Body Records, 2019) has quickly become an underground hit, seeing them embark on multiple tours across Australasia and Europe in the years since its release. Along the way they’ve picked up high praise from BBC 6 Music, Bandcamp and headbangers all over the world. Earth Tongue’s live show is a powerful, cult-like experience - the perfect mix of throw-your-horns-up heavy and can’t-stop-listening catchy. This is affirmed by the high caliber support slots they've been offered recently including IDLES, Ty Segall, King Woman, Kikagaku Moyo and Queens of the Stone Age. 2024 holds many exciting things for Earth Tongue including release of their sophomore album, extensive European festival appearances and their first shows in the US.
