“Fools Gold” perhaps, but golden nonetheless; The Clone Roses are the longest serving and best selling Stone Roses tribute act in the UK. Since their formation, Roses fans have been adoring the Clones’ expertly executed renditions of classics including “Waterfall”, “She Bangs the Drums”, “Made of Stone”, “I am the Resurrection” and many more.
Hailed by Stone Roses bassist Mani as “the second best Stone Roses in the world”, the Clones have earned an outstanding reputation for their attention to detail, from the amps and setlists, to the clothing to swagger; they were even selected as the official Roses tribute choice for Isle of Wight Festival and Kendal Calling festivals. Regularly performing at some of the UK’s best and biggest venues, The Clones have conquered the stages of Manchester Academy, Nottingham Rock City, Shepherd’s Bush Empire and O2 Academy venues, plus the Blackpool Empress Ballroom (scene of an infamous Stone Roses show), always performing to huge crowds nationwide.
Paying the ultimate tribute to their idols, in July 2021 The Clone Roses reenacted the band’s towering live triumph by headlining to a sold-out crowd at the infamous Spike Island site. Marking the 30th Anniversary of The Stone Roses’ era-defining gig at the original Widnes site, ‘Spike Island - The Resurrection’ was one of the first major music events to take place in post-lockdown Britain and also broke records as the “biggest tribute-themed festival” the world had ever seen.
While The Stone Roses’ “Second Comings” and “resurrections” have become so definitive of their history, so too has the impressive continuity and longevity of their Clone counterparts. So what’s their secret?
“Staying grounded and humble. Let’s have it right, we are just a tribute band, people who come to our shows are Stone Roses fans, not Clone Roses fans. We are back down to earth with a bang on Monday mornings like everyone else so it’s important to remember that we are in a fortunate position to be able to tour great venues performing those songs to so many people. In terms of the show itself, I think the key to longevity is making sure the show is good, getting the setlist right, being tight as a band, trying to be as authentic as we can with things like outfits and instruments etc, I think we’ve been good at that side of things over the years.”
25 Years in the game and never better, hardcore fans of The Stones Roses know that when it comes to tributes, “This Is The One” you need to know about. Planning two very special shows to celebrate their anniversary, don’t miss The Clone Roses deservedly bang their drum with two huge shows of significant Roses heritage: the Glasgow Barrowlands and Manchester’s Heaton Park in 2023.
