Lady Blackbird has released her new single ‘Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You’ via Foundation Music/BMG.
Originally written and performed by swamp rock legend Tony Joe White, Blackbird and her creative partner Chris Seefried (Lana Del Rey, Andra Day, Trombone Shorty, The Kooks) have completely transformed the track into a rousing piano ballad that perfectly compliments the tender intimacies of the songwriting.
Speaking on her version of the song, Blackbird says that it “was a cool sticky soul tune that had heartbreak, heartache and headache. I just thought it was bluesy and told a story that I and everyone else could relate to while musically being downtempo and Bluesy. It’s a great song that I thought I could sing.”
The Los Angeles–based artist recently completed a run of headline shows across the UK, with sold-out stops in Bristol, Manchester and London’s Union Chapel, which saw Blackbird be described as “a captivating star in the making” in a 5* review from The Times. She also supported Gregory Porter with her spine-tingling vocals and emotionally affecting material on his UK. In addition to adorning the stages of Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Love Supreme Jazz Festival and Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival.
Her debut album ‘Black Acid Soul’ was released to critical acclaim, The Sunday Times named her their Breaking Act, stating that she “brings a singing voice of extraordinary nuance and immaculate phrasing to a selection of covers/reworkings and pindrop originals” in a 4* review. The Guardian awarded the album a 5* review remarking that Blackbird “finds her calling with an extraordinary collection of songs and performances that burn deep into you”.
Produced by Chris Seefried and boasting evocative musicians such as Miles Davis’ pianist Deron Johnson and Trombone Shorty (Lenny Kravitz, Rod Stewart, Jon Baptise), Black Acid Soul is a mesmerizing collection of meditative and emotionally-affecting tracks that expertly place Blackbird’s astounding voice front and center.
