With all their albums, but notably so with the recent trilogy of ‘Elevate’, ‘Resonate’ and the brand new ‘Unify’, the GRAMMY-nominated US funk sextet Lettuce have been sending out not-so-subliminal messages with their music (and titles) for close to three decades. ‘Unify’, however, showcases exactly what the group have been working towards all these years; not just the unification of humanity through music, but also the reunification of each member to take what is the band’s most powerful, funkiest form to date.
This is powerfully demonstrated with the three singles already made available from ‘Unify', beginning with the classic Lettuce vibes of ‘Gravy Train’, to the fit-for-our-times ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’, to the ultimate stamp of approval from funkmaster general Bootsy Collins on ‘Keep That Funk Alive’. Lettuce have surely cemented their role as groove disciples for the next generation, proudly becoming funk torchbearers for all booty shakers, young and old.
Their eighth studio record in total, ‘Unify' is the third in a row to be made at Colorado Sound Studios in Denver and completes a loose trilogy that began with 2019’s ‘Elevate’, and continued with 2020’s ‘Resonate’. Fans can still expect plenty of the ultra-funky, largely instrumental tracks that Lettuce have always been known for, but in the tightest form they have ever taken.
