Hotly tipped rising music star July Jones today releases a new song 'Girls Can Do Anything'.
The track is electro-pop anthem that lyrically speaks of female equality. As July explains:
"I wrote Girls Can Do Anything a year ago out of frustration. Working in the music industry I felt underrepresented especially as a woman coming out of the East. It was written with a purpose of showing young people that no matter where you’re born you can do anything. I think that when you’re born in a country where pop culture is so far removed it's hard to imagine that doing music for a living is achievable. I want a little me, someone that is now 10, looking at this song believing that everything is possible. You can be whoever you wanna be and achieve anything you want to achieve."
The track is taken from July's debut mixtape ’Silly Little Dream: Pt. 1’ which is released on April 8th. July will then play a headline show at Colours in London on April 14th.
July has recently been announced as the support on Slayyyter's European tour later this year. She will also support Yonaka on their upcoming UK dates. She recently supported GIRLI on her UK tour and appeared on the cover of Gay Times, alongside attending their Gay Times Honours. She also attended the Attitude Awards 2021.
July is an artist with an instantly distinctive look and a unique point of view. Her edgy electro-pop songs combine razor-sharp hooks with forward-thinking production choices and filter-free lyrics about relationships, queerness and mental health. "I'm queer and my partner is transgender, so for me it's very important to speak about being LGBTQ," she says. "I want my fans to know there's a voice for them and not every song has to be about fucking and 'bitches' and alcohol, though it's great to sing about that too sometimes."
Having established herself as an in-demand songwriter with credits including BTS, Zolita, 99 Souls, Girli and Nasty Cherry, this fiercely talented Slovene-British musician is ready to unleash her own project. July says all her songs have a message and she intends to use her platform as an out queer artist carefully. "Being queer isn't really accepted in Slovenia, and even in the UK we're still fighting for our rights," she says. "So why wouldn't I talk about that? It's a really big part of my story."
July also wants to improve awareness of Slovenia and reduce the stigma faced by Eastern European people living in the UK. "I've worked really hard to get to this point and I think other people will find my story inspiring," she says. "But at the same time, this is just the beginning for me. You are not going to believe what's coming next!”
