In the Round festival returns to The Roundhouse for the first time since January 2020 with eight unique shows taking place 15th - 24th January 2022. These will include headline sets from Emeli Sandé, Richard Dawson, Goat Girl, Hak Baker, Balimaya Project and Camilla George presented by Jazz re:freshed, The Kingdom Choir, Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Ségal. Plus, for the first time in Roundhouse history, In The Round will host the UK B-Boy Championships for the 2022 UK edition of the international breakdance competition.
In the Round gives music lovers the chance to see their favourite artists perform intimate shows in the iconic Roundhouse main space, but in a unique format, with the audience seated around a circular stage. These smaller, more intimate shows are special for artists and fans alike.
The Roundhouse is proud to exclusively present award-winning songwriter and popstar Emeli Sandé MBE’s London show in January as part of In the Round. Newly signed to Chrysalis Records, the new label signals an exciting artistic rebirth for Emeli, the fruits of which will be showcased on the 19th January 2022.
Here’s the full line-up of headline artists for In the Round 2022:
15th January 2022 - Hak Baker presents Bricks in the Wall - London-based G-folk singer, poet and social documentarian, revered for his ‘Babylon’ 2019 mixtape highlighting working class struggles in his unique and spontaneous, intuitive music style.
18th January 2022 - Goat Girl - this eclectic South London four-piece fuse sci-fi synthesisers, off-beat chord progressions, analogue drums machines, diverse vocal styles and distinct, gritty guitars to explore new sonic territories on their second album ‘On All Fours’, released earlier this year on Rough Trade.
19th January 2022 – Emeli Sandé - Introduced to the world ten years ago, Emeli Sandé MBE has become an icon of British singer-songwriting; emotional, honest, and prolific in the kind of manner that cements you as a go-to artist for heartfelt pop sensibility.
20th January 2022 – Richard Dawson - the black-humoured bard of Newcastle presents a very special solo set for In the Round, featuring material from his celebrated last album '2020' stripped down to its raw guitar-and-voice essence, plus live favourites taken from his back catalogue of albums including ‘Peasant’, ‘The Glass Trunk’ and more
21st January 2022 – Balimaya Project and Camilla George presented by Jazz re:freshed - Like Kuti’s Egypt 80 or Sun Ra’s Arkestra, Balimaya Project numbers 16 players from across UK’s entwined afrobeats, jazz and UK rap musical landscape. Led by composer/arranger and leading UK-based Djembe player, Yahael Camara Onono and featuring members of bands including KOKOROKO and Seed Ensemble. Nigerian-born saxophonist Camilla George fuses African and Western music, creating a hypnotizing blend of afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz. George’s music is politically minded and spotlights African history and slavery: her third studio album, ‘Ibio Ibio’ is a tribute to her tribe the Ibibio people of South Eastern Coastal Nigeria. This is a joint headline show and will feature a collaboration during one of their sets especially for In the Round and in association with Jazz: refreshed who partnered with The Roundhouse for their own event last summer.
22nd January 2022 – The Kingdom Choir - Celebrating their 25th year and winners of BBC Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of The Year, The Kingdom Choir has performed at British Summer Time with Barbara Streisand, opened the Major League Baseball game, performed headline tours across the US and Australia, and headlined at Latitude, Hay Festival and Cornbury Festival. They also performed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding in 2018.
23rd January 2022 – UK B-Boy Breakdance Championships: Battle In The Round - see below
24th January 2022 – Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Ségal - Ballaké Sissoko, one of Mali’s greatest exponents of the kora, joins forces once again with French cellist Vincent Ségal, performing from their Nø Førmat album, ‘Musique de Nuit’, in what promises to be a thrilling duet.
As part of the Roundhouse’s commitment to developing young, emerging talent, Roundhouse Resident Artists will perform as support acts for each headline artist.

More about In the Round
Now in its sixth year, In the Round has become a well respected annual concert series and has hosted an eclectic range of artists from John Grant and Mulatu Astatke to Martha Wainwright and KOKOROKO, Patti Smith and John Cale to Ghetts and Lisa Hannigan. Artists will often tailor their performance to the space or perform something distinct from their normal set, featuring special projects, premieres and unique collaborations. All meaning that this is a unique, one-off experience, even for audiences who’ve seen the artist play before in a bigger setting.
Lucy Wood, head of music at The Roundhouse, had this to say about In the Round’s sixth edition:
“I’m overjoyed to be presenting my first In the Round Festival, especially because it’s one of the festivals I’ve enjoyed coming to the most as a punter. It’s such a wonderful format to create new experiences for the audience, being able to really appreciate the detail and fine artistry that goes into a live performance. I’ve brought together a line up that reflects a range of different kinds of music. In the Round allows such diverse creativity to thrive within the Roundhouse main space: our beautiful building means artists and audiences experience the splendour of a concert hall but with our historic rock and roll edge.”
