Imelda May joins Van Morrison Audley End date
28 April 2021
Imelda May and the Joanna Eden Band have joined the line-up for Van Morrison’s outdoor show at the English Heritage site Audley End House & Gardens in Saffron Walden, Essex, this summer, which also features very special guests The Waterboys.
Imelda May is a multi-award-winning Irish singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Following on from a breakout performance on Later… with Jools Holland, Imelda has since staged her own sold-out tours across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America and Australia, performing for royalty, presidents and at major events around the world.
She’s collaborated with legendary artists such as Lou Reed, Bono, Elvis Costello, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Robert Plant and has, most recently, sung several songs on Hollywood actor Jeff Goldblum’s debut jazz album.
Imelda May’s recently released album ‘11 Past The Hour’ features collaborators including Noel Gallagher, Ronnie Wood and Miles Kane. The album debuted this week at No.6 in the UK Album Chart, giving Imelda her fourth UK Top 10 album, and also hit the top spot on the Irish Album Chart, making her the only Irish female soloist to achieve four No.1 albums in the Irish charts this century.
Described by Time Out as ‘The UK’s answer to Diana Krall and Norah Jones’, Joanna Eden has performed her jazz influenced original music all over the world and supported world-class artists including Jamie Cullum, the Buena Vista Social Club, Ronan Keating, and the Blockheads.
The Joanna Eden Band feature British jazz luminaries and combine the energy and rhythmic virtuosity of Latin music with the intimacy and honesty of Joanna’s acclaimed originals which MOJO Magazine described as having ‘melody, mystery and bite!’.
The show at Audley End House & Gardens in Saffron Walden, the opulent Jacobean mansion house in the gorgeous Essex countryside, will be headlined by Van Morrison and feature very special guests The Waterboys.
Van Morrison’s matchless song-writing and vocal talents have seen him produce an incredible body of material throughout the course of his career that has seen him traverse, and indeed master, everything from the British R&B, in which he originally made his name, to Jazz, Celtic and Soul.
Though also experimenting in these different genres, Van Morrison’s commercial success is well documented – ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, ‘Gloria’, ‘Here Comes The Night’, ‘Jackie Wilson Said’, ‘Bright Side Of The Road, ‘Have I Told You Lately’ – the list goes on.
Born of his Irish Showband instincts, the magic of the live performance has been a consistent feature of Morrison’s career. Over the course of his fifty year career Van Morrison has been recognised with awards and accolades such as a Knighthood, a Brit, an OBE, an Ivor Novello, 6 Grammys, honorary doctorates from Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Ulster, entry into The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the French Ordres Des Artes Et Des Lettres, which all attest to the international reach of Van’s musical art.
Van Morrison releases his latest album ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ on 7th May.
Very special guests for the show will be The Waterboys.
Few bands have as great a live reputation as The Waterboys. From their mid-1980s "big music" period through the influential mix of Celtic, gospel and country on their classic ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ tours, to the hundreds of brilliant shows accompanying the last decade's roots-y, soulful triptych of albums ‘Modern Blues’, ‘Out Of All This Blue’ and ‘Where The Action Is’, The Waterboys have consistently blended tightness, inspiration and improvisation to reach heights of performance few other acts can.
The 2021 version of the band features the established core of Mike Scott (vocals, guitar, piano), Steve Wickham (electric fiddle), Memphis keyboard great "Brother" Paul Brown, ace British drummer Ralph Salmins, and funky Irish bassist Aongus Ralston.
Last year, the band released their most recent album ‘Good Luck, Seeker’ to widespread critical acclaim.
The relevance and popular reach of The Waterboys has never been greater. Their songs have are performed by artists as varied as Ellie Goulding, who scored a top 3 UK hit with ‘How Long Will I Love You’; Prince and U2 who sang ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ onstage and Fiona Apple, who recorded it last year; indie rockers The War On Drugs, Dawes and The Mystery Jets; and classic singers Tom Jones and Rod Stewart. ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ also featured in last year's smash Netflix film Let It Snow and top HBO series The Affair.
