WOMAD Burbuja Gran Canaria - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2020 going ahead
03 November 2020
WOMAD, The Worlds Festival, is delighted and excited to announce that WOMAD Burbuja Gran Canaria - Las Palmas De Gran Canaria will be going ahead from the 19 to 22 November 2020 in and around the Santa Catalina Park in the heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
WOMAD Burbuja Gran Canaria - Las Palmas De Gran Canaria has been the climax of the WOMAD Festival year for more than twenty-five years, but 2020 will be a unique and very special edition, happening as it does at the end of the most difficult year for the Global Music and Events industry in living memory in the centre of a community that has been hit hard by the collapse of international tourism.
Together, the Festival team including the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Government of the Canary Islands, WOMAD International, DD&Company Producciones and Promoción de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain have worked hard to create the World Premier of the “WOMAD ‘Burbuja’ Festival” transforming the location into an innovative COVID safe site with three bubble stages and performers from across Spain and the islands, showcasing the music that is being created in the Canary Islands, as well as international artists who will arrive along the travel corridors that have recently opened with these islands.
It is impossible to exaggerate how important this festival is, bringing employment to local people, guests to island hotels, dinners to the islands many restaurants and hope for the start of a recovery in the international tourism and events industries.
None of this would be possible without the courage and support of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain and the leadership of WOMAD’s local partner, DD&Company Producciones and Promoción de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as the support of the Health authorities of the Canary Islands.
WOMAD International Director Chris Smith said:
“We have been working towards this festival for many months during a hard year. To get the go ahead brings excitement and a commitment to creating a safe festival and a template for safe events to start again the world over. Thereby, raising the spirits of our partner communities and laying the foundation for a creative future.”
DD&Company Director Dania Dévora said:
“When we were thinking that there was no hope for our festivals due to the pandemic crisis in 2020, a new option and a beacon of hope arose thanks to the festival we have in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. To make it happen, we started working from out from the gate to make it a reality. Our primal goal was to give hope to our industry and community while trying to get closer to the new normal we have been forced to live.”
