The Anon String Quartet will be performing on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 2000h at Castille and Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 1330h at the Church of St James, Merchant Street, Valletta as part of a programme of activities organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.

This concert will present music by different composers of the Baroque period, some less known to concert-goers in the Maltese islands. The audience will listen to Henry Purcell’s ‘Rondo’ and ‘Hornpipe’ from the Abdelazar Suite, Rupert Ignaz Mayr’s ‘Passacaglia’ from his Suite No. 7, Mathew Locke’s ‘Curtain Tune’ from the music for The Tempest and Arcangelo Corelli’s much loved ‘Concerto Grosso - Per la Notte di Natale’.

Of particular interest is the fact that the musicians will be using Baroque bows which enhance the interpretation of the scores.

The Anon String Quartet is a recently established string quartet made up of seasoned musicians who share a passion for chamber music and who have enjoyed playing together for several years but only recently decided to give themselves a name. Whilst accounting for the quartet’s long-lasting anonymity, the name also highlights the promptness of execution which characterises the quartet’s playing.

The quartet features Marcelline Agius and Nadia Debono both on violin together with Stephen Galea and Angelica Galea on viola and cello respectively. All are musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and have a vast experience in performing orchestral and chamber music, whilst also being soloists in their own right.

They have performed extensively in their various capacities both locally and overseas, and have a number of recordings to their credit, the most recent as the newly formed Anon String Quartet.

The Anon String Quartet’s repertoire ranges from Baroque to Contemporary music. Its interpretation of the Baroque repertoire in particular is characterised by interest in the spirit of the age, the composer and the particular piece, and in clarity and balance in execution.

Entrance to the concert is free of charge. Donations to the Community Chest Fund would be appreciated.
