Happy Mondays Released Unique Pill Edition Reissue Of Pills N Thrills And Bellyaches

London Records have released a unique 'Pill Edition' reissue of Happy Mondays' landmark 1990 album Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches, marking the first major reissue programme for the album.

Part record release, part art object, and part pharmaceutical parody, the edition transforms one of British music’s most iconic records into a collectable piece of Madchester history. Inspired by a rare promotional item created around the album’s original release, the run was strictly limited to 200 copies across four distinct colourways. Housed within bespoke pharmaceutical-style packaging, the set includes a 3D-printed Happy Mondays capsule, a custom pill organiser, a GMEX-inspired rave whistle, acid blotter artwork, a purity testing kit inspired by Shaun Ryder's call for drug safety in clubs, and an embossed credit-card-style download pass featuring the complete digital boxset audio.

Originally released in November 1990, Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches captured the chaotic, euphoric spirit of the Madchester movement by blending indie rock, acid house rhythms, and funk grooves. Featuring era-defining singles such as "Step On", "Kinky Afro", and "Loose Fit", the album reached No. 4 in the UK charts and became a defining cultural snapshot of Northern nightlife and late-80s/early-90s dance culture.

The band's sonic evolution accelerated following 1988’s Bummed and key remixes of "Wrote for Luck" by Paul Oakenfold and Vince Clarke. This culminated in the 1990 breakthrough hit "Step On", which reworked John Kongos’ 1971 track "He’s Gonna Step On You Again" into a chart-topping anthem featuring Ryder's famous line, "You’re twisting my melon man..."

Blurring the lines between music packaging and design artefact, the newly available 'Pill Edition' celebrates the humour, visual identity, and enduring cultural mythology of the Happy Mondays' seminal release.
