‘A Separate Divide’ is comprised of nine distinctive tracks that explore various concepts of division within society as a means for disorder and elitist gain. The band from Houston, Texas bombards the listener with coarse reverberations that are controlled by their own stylisation of musical arrangement and the dynamics of song structure. Grungy guitars are prevalent in many songs, taking place as a focal point within the tracks as they grate, wind and shred bellicosely.
Some songs like ‘A End to a Means’ and ‘Alambrista’ are so indelibly anthemic that they don’t even require any lyricism over them. Often, because of the band’s dedication to musical expression, you find that songs are overridden by instrumentality and lyrics are lines of singular expressions that are neither overindulgent nor wordy.
‘A Separate Divide’ is an album with a homesick progressive rock persona and enthusiasm that is serenaded and reinforced by tidy cerebral notions from lead vocalist, Alvaro Rodriguez, whose words stir you intellectually. Repeated riffs and patterns act as an exercise in musical lobotomy drilling their haunting catchiness into your mind and remaining there long after the record concludes. The album is definitively heavy, heady rock but it isn’t afraid to experiment with down tempo forms of delivery and operatic instrumentality. ‘Checkpoints and Borders’ for example is as simple as acoustic guitars backed by swelling strings but its meditative sombreness displays the band’s diversity. Ultimately, a philosophy of diversity is what ‘A Separate Divide’ desperately strives for both musically and through Liquid Casting’s pensive communications.
