Darius Rucker has said that the idea for his third 'country' album was to produce something that "leapt out of the radio". The singer says the success of his previous two albums had been a surprise but now is the real test of whether he is an established artist in Nashville circles. From the opening chords of the toe-tapping soft-rock of the title track, you discover what he means by leaping out of the radio. The likes of True Believers, the cover version of Old Crow Medicine Show's Wagon Wheel and Miss You are all gold dust to American radio stations, with sunny singalong choruses.
Since moving from the big world of rock to the tighter Country community, Rucker's voice has always been his main strength, allied with some sharp song writing from Frank Rogers. Once again here the combination is a winner. After that fast-paced opening the album's best moment sees Sheryl Crow duet on the exquisite Love Without You. The tale of a broken heart sees Rucker and Crow's voice entwine to bewitching effect. It should be a huge radio hit on both sides of the Atlantic but the UK will probably ignore its beauty.
Other highlights include I Will Love You Still, Shine and Leavin' The Light On - which all follow the same template of middle of the road romantic reflections, with the latter track seeing Rucker in true crooning mode. It's perhaps ironic that given the intended aim of the record, that the one track that doesn't really work is Radio, which has an awkward feel and seems out of place.
Country music has a strange stigma in the UK (thanks to the likes of Billy Ray Cyrus maybe) which perhaps stops some people exploring some of its more accessible material. But the likes of LeAnn Rimes and Ms Crow have taken more main stream country to the top of the UK charts before and it's quite possible Darius Rucker could do the same.
