It’s rare that a relatively new fledgling band can keep the momentum from a good first album onto a better second album. Countless acts over the years have fell down to ‘poor-second-album-syndrome’ but Sharks an indie punk guitar band from Lemington Spa have certainly not slipped; their new album Selfhood has one gear… and that gear is go!
Fresh off the stream from their debut album No Gods released last year on Rise Records they quickly got working on this new venture with the anarchy turned down but the guitars still turned up. The product is a modern day indie punk guitar masterpiece worthy of the big guns of the genre like Gaslight Anthem or The Strokes.
The album entitled Selfhood opens with the track of the same name and it’s basically homage to what is yet to come. Throughout the 11 track strong guitar melodies flow entwine with gruff vocals and lyrics courtesy of singer James Mattock. Peaking the album the track Portland (which will also be released as a single) the sharp vocals turn into crowd pleasing ‘la la las’ to great effect. Every single track is what modern day punk rock is: clear cut and concise, musically striking and vocally and emotionally charged. Brilliant!
