Consisting of EP’s “Feed Me with Your Kiss”, “You Made Me Realise”, “Glider” and “Tremolo” along with seven unheard tracks, this set is the most sought after prize amongst the new re-released collection.
The joy is in the unreleased tracks “Angel”, “How Do You Do It” and “Good for You”, they stand alongside the released tracks with perfect poise, They’re distinctive in style of The Valentines, droning melancholy with hushed vocals that appear as if someone appearing out of the fog of chaos that whistles around.
Instrumental tracks 1&2 are haunting and would be an excellent addition to a horror movie soundtrack. The influence of Brian Eno on Instrumental no 2 is apparent, with the swooping rhythms creating a beautifully isolated landscape, lonesome and idyllic but melancholic. It really demonstrates the perfectionist, Kevin Shields, in the studio at his best.
The compilation best shows the evolution of a band in the ascendancy through their four EP’s, how they develop that Valentines sound, It almost gives a glimpse of the direction that Shields could of gone in, if they had chosen to carry on.
The problem was, how could the group top the critical success and the pop perfection that was Loveless in 1991, to much pressure resulted in that album never being produced.
A busy year for Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine, with the revelation that a new album is in the pipe line is great news, with the rarities compilation providing the appetiser for things to come.
If this new collection of songs, oddities and EP’s, along with the re-masters of Isn’t Anything and Loveless, doesn’t whet your appetite for the second coming of My Bloody Valentine then I doubt much will.
