In common with London Punks the Bermondsey Joyriders, TMTWNBBFN are modern day punks, highly political and also highly motivated.
In this case they are also students of history and the entire album is set and refers to Victorian England. In common once again with the Joyriders and very much different to many of the original punks, they are musically very ept.
The theme is Victorian society – all the classes – and played and sung with a lot of tongue in cheek but an acid look at the times as well.
Think of a musical form and they cover it, from thrash and through punk into folk and even psych but their heart is in the punk and it really is the real deal.
From ‘Victoria’s Secret’, a thrash metal look at Prince Albert’s shortcomings, through the thumbs-in-braces and handkerchief-on bald-pate japery of ‘Margate Fhtagn’ or the overtly political diatribe of ‘Doing It For The Whigs’ - the Tories were hated a hundred and twenty years ago too – the Anachronistic comedy of Andrew O’Neill puts the album squarely in the Billy Bragg meets Music Hall world. ‘The People’s Common Sense Medical Advisor’ could almost be a Lancashire Hotpots track. All Victorian life is here.
There really isn’t a track that I don’t like but I guess that my favourite would be the least hard one on the album: ‘Mutiny In The Common Soldiery’ really hits the spot along with Andy Heintz’ musical saw and truly impassioned vocals.
A belter of an album and one I’d love to see played live – Pip Pip!
