A dark and quite delightful album from the Nashville singer songwriter.

She has been releasing albums since 1999 and her reputation has been growing year on year, such that she is able to garner a powerful set of backing musicians – John Hiatt’s fabourite guitarist Doug Lancio also plays Mandolin, John Jackson (guitar & Harmonica) has played with Dylan and Shely Lynne, bassist Frank Swart was with Patty Griffin and keyboards come courtesy of Billy Earhart who has done time with the Amazing Rhythm Aces. These guys expect to be playing with talent and Ms White’s songs show she has just that.

This is country and Americana but not the ‘Yee-haw and big hats’ country so much as the kind of songs that are coming from the heart and are aimed at people’s experiences and emotions. The title track, for instance, was written for Duane Jarvis as he lay dying from colon cancer in 2009 and puts over love and sadness for his passing without ever getting sentimental or mushy. On the other hand, ‘Molten Fire’ is a rocker with a dark tone and all about ‘wrong’ love affairs with dangerous women.

Her voice is strong and ‘characterful’ and her songwriting is all about melodies and stories while the playing all through is excellent.
This doesn’t break any new ground but she is a real talent.
