Hooked is the debut album from London-based French soul singer, writer, guitarist and pianist Sophie Delila. Already a success in mainland Europe, the album has just been released here, following her latest single "Can't Stop Loving You".
'Hooked’ was one of those CD’s I get from time to time with no pre-conceived idea who she was, or what style of music she delivered (having not read the press release first!!). All I can say is WOW!!
Sophie Delila is a talent that has to be discovered by a wider audience. There are elements of Amy Winehouse, Duffy and rival Corinne Bailey Rae, but ultimately with the sultry vocals, Motown inspired sound and fantastic production; the sound is all Sophie Delila’s
Opener 'Nature Of The Crime’ is the track that got me hooked (sorry!) it is such an instant number with beautiful summery vibe, great beat and amazing vocals. The single 'Can't Keep Loving You’ follows and continues to show Sophie’s talents.
As well as the Motown soul sound, Sophie also sashays over to a more modern sound emanating Alicia Keys’ knack for knowing a great piano tune on 'Hey Mister’ although never getting close enough to be accused of plagiarism. 'Betterside’ moves even closer to the modern day sound and shows the breadth of Sophie’s vocal range and musical styles and influences.
This album really is the perfect backdrop to the current summer weather; sultry, sexy and of the highest quality.
