Within the British music industry, the name Kris Dollimore is one that makes you stand to attention. The cover of 02/01/1978 features a photo of Kris on his twelfth birthday proudly holding his guitar overlooked by a poster of a freshly faced, spiky haired Johnny Rotten on one side and Jimmy Page and Led Zepplin on the other side. If that is an indication of Kris's initial musical influences, this heritage has continued in style.
A founder member of legendary London rock five piece The Godfathers, Kris then went on to be one of the countries most respected session guitarists before enjoying success in The Damned and then Del Amitri. He has now decided to propel himself centre stage with 12 tracks of modern, British blues. If, like me, you are not familiar with the blues, this is the perfect introduction. Listen out for 'Miss Emma Jane', 'Loved Up Blues' and the enigmatic 'East of England' (Kris's ode to his birthplace) as the pick of the originals. Groundhog and a highly original version of Iggy and The Stooges 'TV Eye' are the most notable covers whilst 'The Enemy' best highlights Kris's mercurial talent.
For those who are seasoned followers of the blues, this selection of mainly original material, will grab, shake and enthral you.
Whilst record companies scrap for singer songwriter genius, it is only a matter of time before a blues artist comes to the fore. If it is down to pure talent and the songs, you may well be hearing a lot more of Kris Dollimore.
