Today (Thursday 1st April) for April Fool’s Day, BBC Radio 6 Music is going pop!
From Lauren Laverne (7.30am-10.30am) through to Gideon Coe (9pm-midnight), listeners will hear nothing but pop classics on 6 Music.
Presenters across the day will celebrate what pop means to them and bring the audience archive 6 Music session tracks, performed by stars including Sia, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Lorde, early on in their careers.
Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music says: “It’s April Fool’s Day and 6 Music goes Pop! Our usual service resumes tomorrow.”
Lauren Laverne (7.30am-10.30am) launches 6 Music Goes Pop at 7.55am, joined by singer, songwriter and queen of the Kitchen Disco, Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Lauren will be playing hits including Mariah Carey, George Michael and more. Plus, the show’s regular People’s Playlist will celebrate the greatest collaborations in pop, in honour of the 20th anniversary of Christina Aguilera, Pink, Missy Elliott and Mya’s cover of Lady Marmalade.
Tom Ravenscroft, who is sitting in for Mary Anne Hobbs (10.30am-1pm) will be playing non-stop pop bangers and taking requests from listeners, who can join in the fun throughout the day by sending song requests via text (64046) or on social media using the hashtag #6MusicGoesPop.
Shaun Keaveny (1pm-4pm) will offer up a special Golden Years edition of Gold Soundz and will be joined by Radio 1’s Mollie King to reveal 6 Music’s Best New Pop. Plus, singer-songwriter Billie Marten covers Nelly Furtado’s single, I’m Like A Bird and Shaun invites listeners to sing along with him to Take That’s Greatest Day.
On Steve Lamacq (4pm-7pm) there’ll be another chance to hear his early interview with Adele. Steve will also play a PJ & Duncan track as the Lost 45 and his regular feature Who Are You? will be a pop special.
Marc Riley (7pm-9pm) will feature tunes from Buzzcocks to Britney and a Manic Q&A with singer-songwriter Freya Beer, whose first gig was Taylor Swift. Plus, tonight’s Parallel Universe is set in 1979, which features Joe Jackson’s Top 40 hit Different For Girls.
Gideon Coe (9pm-midnight) will present a Top 40 show, featuring three hours of records which reached the UK Top 40.
