PRS for Music has published a specially curated digital edition of M Magazine, as part of its International Women’s Day 2021 celebrations. Read the magazine in full.

Meticulously created in collaboration with Guest Editor and PRS Foundation Keychange Project Manager, Maxie Gedge, the 60-page magazine honours female songwriters, music and culture. The collection of exclusively commissioned features explores themes ranging from misogyny and inequality, to redefining what it means to be a woman in today’s music industry.

Lavida Loca, who burst onto the UK rap scene in 2019 stars on the cover of this unique edition of M Magazine. Inside, the 23-year-old discusses her love for songwriting, solidarity between female rappers and the importance of telling your own story.

Those featured in the magazine include Irish innovator and Disco Queen, Róisín Murphy, who considers the collaborative process behind her work; platinum selling singer-songwriter, Kate Nash, who talks candidly about her past and a new initiative to build training programmes on sex and power dynamics for the touring musician; and the women empowered by the Technical Tour Training course (3T). Supported by Nao and Mura Masa, 3T is a first of its kind in training Black women to bring music performances to life from behind the scenes.

Elsewhere, Guest Editor Gedge explores leadership and gender, providing insightful and honest viewpoints from senior executives across the music industry; and opera dramaturg Sophie Rashbrook focuses on the world of media writers. Here, award-winning British film and TV composers Nainita Desai, Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres, Donna McKevitt and Isobel Waller-Bridge delve into visibility, genre-stereotyping and their hopes for the next generation of womxn composers.

PRS for Music represents the rights of over 150,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in the UK and around the world. Published by PRS for Music, M Magazine is created to inspire and empower songwriters, musicians and industry leaders alike.

Maya Radcliffe, Editor at M Magazine, said: “If we want to create a sector where there is genuine equality, we need to bring more women out of the shadows and into the light. By championing women in every corner of the industry we are actively choosing to challenge gender-based stereotypes. The whole business, including those behind the scenes, need to reflect and promote the incredible diversity of those making the music.”
